On Kayaks, Air Fresheners and Inukshuks
I'm throwing myself head first into Vancouver's watersports scene this week (pun intended...), with my first attempt at Kite boarding off Spanish Banks going relatively well yesterday afternoon and a full day of whitewater kayaking up in Squamish tomorrow.
It turns out that finding an appropriately sized rental whitewater kayak is as hard as shopping for size 15 shoes...not that I'm surprised or anything. Fortunately, MEC has a fine selection of boats at its disposal, and after a little bit of tinkering with some foam and a screwdriver I was able to squeeze myself into the narrow and shallow shell. Now the only concern is dealing with the glacier-fed river's water temperature, but with a shorty wetsuit and balmy 26 degree weather I should be ok.
The provincial electoral race is only a few days old and already British Columbians are getting tired of the rhetoric being spouted from both sides' war machines. The Liberals keep insisting voraciously that the next decade will be a 'golden' one for the province if they're voted back into office, while the NDP has turned 'trust' into their own argumentative bunker. Both parties are talking trash, but it remains to be seen who smells worse. Perhaps the little Green air freshener dangling in the proverbial political window might do us all a little bit of good after all...
Lastly, the Vancouver 2010 logo was officially unveiled two nights ago at GM Place (open for business with the Canucks on semi-permanent vacation). CTV's broadcast was unnecessarily dramatic, but the end result was impressive. Let the games begin.
