Epic day at Whistler today, despite being the only skiier amongst four snowboarding friends. Deep, dry powder all over the mountain, blue skies and next to no lift line-ups. I pitty those who chose to stay in town for 'boxing day deals', particularly the sad individuals we saw waiting outside A&B Sound at 2am last night (on our way home from The Return of the King), to be the first in line for, wait for it....40% miscellaneous electronics! Woohooo!
The highlight of our unreal day on the mountain had to be randomly meeting a back-country tour guide from Bella Coola who knows the mountain like no one else and took us to a powder field known as "Million-Dollar Ridge". Let me tell you - some people would pay a million dollars to get even a taste of the soft, deep deep powder in which we layed down fresh tracks. Oh man. Capped of the day with a waist-deep trip through the glades, including face-shots gallore, and a super-g trip down the Dave Murray Downhill, (the race course for the 2010 Olympics).
Words can barely describe the feeling of euphoria one achieves while sailing over two to three feet of untouched, dry snow for over 100 meters. The half-hour treck out was well worth it, as were the four or five deep gashes my skiis suffered as a result of several close encounters with exposed rock on the initial descent towards Million Dollar.
Unreal.
