News flash: Fire alarm at McLennan disrupts the studying masses.
I hate in when this happens. Fuelled by my large TH coffee, (black - the only way to go), a nutritious banana and a conversation with Mik and Harry, I had hit the books and was immersed in the politics of the Klein revolution when the alarm began to sound. Despite his harsh treatment of the poor and marginalized, he deflty implimented serious cuts throughout the 1990s to solve Alberta's 'deficit crisis'. The thing is, many would argue that the province was never in such a crisis, with multi-billion dollar surpluses becoming the norm. What a crafty premier - it's all about marginalizing the 'special interests' and using the leverage of an apathetic polity to impliment drastic policy measures...
He's much like Paul Martin as well - for instance, when he became premier in 1992, taking over from Geddy as leader of the Alberta Progressive Conservatives, he emphasized that his was a 'Klein , not a Getty, government'. Another indication that Martin has found inspiration in Klein's style of governance is the way he kicked out all the Getty-loyalists from cabinet upon taking control of the government.
It will be interesting to see how long it takes for the marginalized and alienated 'special interests' to rise-up against his neo-liberal policies (which have brought all kinds of revenue into the province to fund education and health care programs), and bring a new party to power. But hey, when yours is one of only two 'have' provinces in the country, who wants change?
I'll be taking a closer look at Saskatchewan this evening, I wouldn't be surprised to be singing the praises of the NDP (gasp!) by the end of it.
